What role do audiences play in the development of culture? How do the citizens of a city contribute to its musical or cultural enrichment?

How does national culture influence the musical customs and culture of a city? Give examples.

Sometimes the adulation of fans spur the artist on to greater heights of creation which is why with the restrictions of sheltering in place some musicians find it difficult to create. If the audience do not laugh at the jokes of a comedian it can be devastating to them personally and to their career.

They pay money to see things, or not, as the case may be. Some things may be subsidized by the government, but if they don't get enough popular support it is difficult to justify expenditure of public money. That tends to regulate the kind of culture you end up with.

An example: Few Londoners go to the theatre as it is so expensive, most of the big shows are patronized by tourists and tend to be mainstream musicals which go on for years. That stifles outlets for new work.
