Is the bible sending mixed messages about weapon ownership?

Some pro-gun people I know frequently point to the following verse.

Luke 22:36 ► He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.

However, when the sword Jesus explicitly instructed his disciples to buy was used, he instead says:

Matthew 26:52 ► "Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.

Which position is better supported biblically?

The gun fanatics only read the part that supports their wishes.

Sword was the personal defense weapon of the day. Sometimes it is put in it's place, other times it is needed to be used. But certainly don't get rid of it.

Having a sword is not the same as drawing a sword. Most of the time, people won't mess with you if you look like your sufficiently "weaponed up". It's kind of like speaking softly, while carrying a big stick.

Jesus said also to Peter: " Return your sword to its place, for all those who take the sword will perish by the sword."  - Matthew 26: 52.

Both passages involve owning a sword. The difference is about our readiness to use them.

Luckly in America the bible nor any other book writen by man about the gods is not what our laws are set in but our constitution and government.

No, the story of Jesus points to one unmistakable conclusion:  those that would follow him and call him “lord” are to abstain from any violence whatsoever.

Of course, many can find wiggle room with a myriad of verses.  Christians have always done that down through the ages.

Biblically, nothing. Actual gunshot statistics support Matthew 26:52.
