Do Microsoft provide a free word processing app?

    If you need free, then you'll be fine with LibreOffice or OpenOffice, both of them mimicking Office 2003 very well, including Word.

    They're good enough to write novels on, because I do. Yes, you can save in .doc form.

    Yes, it is called WORDPAD... you are better off downloading LibreOffice, OpenOffice or one of the many free office systems as they are much more flexible.
