Bull...we have a hierarchy of needs that are active all the time at the lower levels, like the physiological needs. Only when we consider the higher level needs, like self-actualization do we find those needs coming into and out of our lives.

    Check this out:

Key Takeaways: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

According to Maslow, we have five categories of needs: physiological, safety, love, esteem, and self-actualization. NOTE: the "love" one is also called the "associative" need.

In this theory, higher needs in the hierarchy begin to emerge when people feel they have sufficiently satisfied the previous need. NOTE: In other words only the higher ones might be dormant much of the time.
