Is the show Scrubs making fun of real life?

The woman lying in bed says "I wish my husband was here he passed away several months ago", the woman standing by the bed responds "that sucks", then the woman lying in bed says "it totally sucks, we were together for 53 years"

It's a workplace sitcom, not really any different from The Office or 30 Rock or any number of other workplace sitcoms.  All sitcoms try to blend in some drama with their comedy, and doing a sitcom in a hospital means it's pretty much inevitable that you're going to have some moments where the writers try to remind the audience that for all of our characters' zany hijinks, they are doing serious work and aren't callously endangering their patients.
