Because this site got dumbed down, also too many trolls spammed for pages. People are lazy on the internet and dont like reading.

The limit on the number of characters used is as mentioned to prevent excessively long answers, especially copy/paste from say Wikipedia, or some other source. The thousand character limit is very generous in my opinion, and I've had a long history of writing some very lengthy responses. So coming from someone with a history of lengthy posts, the character limit is more than enough, for most questions. The only exceptions would be those that needs a  great amount of detail, such as where there's a need for a bit more in the way of say historical, scientific, or technical details.

By the way I prefer and enjoy when I can get away with short and accurate responses.

It keeps people from writing and posting books and comments so long you think your reading a book report .

So idiots don't keep posting novels instead of a simple and direct question.

It is to prevent people from writing long and rambling posts. People are less likely to read them.

As mentioned, it's a character limit. It's to prevent people from writing novels as questions or answers, or copy/pasting huge amounts of text. The longer a post is, the less likely there are that many, if any, will read all of it. Questions need to be long enough to provide enough info so it's clear what the OP is asking, and answers need to be brief enough to give a quality answer (but then provide links to resources for further detail/info if the OP wants to review more info on that topic).

    It's a Q&A site, not for a dissertation.

  • It is actually a character limit.  It is for one thing to stop short one word replies for easy points and it is to stop spammers from running their mouths here on their causes and to reduce the amount of bandwidth used on the site.  You will find all sites like this has a limit.  It doesn't take a programmer to figure it out.  Plus one that learns over 20 years ago is really useless these days.

    • Carol learned about the space limit from some 13 year old and now try to take credit for it.  Also taken a programming course 20 years ago for a few credits do not make you an authority on programming.  Get off the high horse.

The character (not word) limits are for two reasons:

    1. People are not going to read pages and pages of material in questions or answers. The history of the site shows this is true.

    2. Some bad users would try to post the entire encyclopedia just to harm the site.

If you need more characters than available (more than 5000 for questions), this is not the site for you.

Good question. Maybe to limit lengthy questions with unneeded information.
