This name was chosen because the virus is genetically related to the coronavirus responsible for the SARS outbreak of 2003. While related, the two viruses are different.

It's whole name is Coronavirus Disease 2019 shortened to COVID-19. Coronavirus is the cause of the disease while 2019 was when it was identified.

The "19" signifies the year "2019" when it was discovered. You better hope to God no covid-20 develops.

It's named after the year it was identified.

Once everyone agrees on an official name it sticks.  2019 was the discovery date.  It would lead to confusion if the name kept changing to keep up with the year.  If there was a new strain of coronavirus that appeared this year, it might be called covid-20, or if there was more than one, perhaps 20a, 20b, ... something unique.
