    You should know as much about printing as possible because that is how your photographs will be viewed by many people.

    I'd say you should know about ICC profiles and soft proofing - after that, take Frank's advice and leave it to the pros.

    That it's better to have someone who specializes in printing to do your printing than doing it yourself.  Time spent in front of a computer is time you can't spend either making photos (i.e. more money) or marketing/promoting your business.

    Are you talking about home printing or sending it out to a third party?

    You need to calibrate your monitor to ensure that what you see on-screen is what you'll get when you print it out.

    For external/third party sources, you need to check which specific formats they accept. i.e. .jpg, .png, .tiff, .rgb, etc.  What sizes the printer can produce, which types of paper they print on, whether printing can be done on other media.
