It is an appointment but the attorney general is supposed to be impartial and not an advocate for anybody and William Barr has badly abused his position.

The Attorney General of the United States is appointed by the President of the United States.

Contrary to what linkus86 stated, at the state level, it CAN be an elected OR an appointed position.
