They searched in the night, torchlight shining (on / onto) leaves of bushes.

Here is the most common way to express this idea:
> They searched into the night, shining the torchlight on the leaves of the bushes.
You can also say:
> They searched after dark
> shining the torchlight onto the leaves or the bushes.

Either could work, but "on" seems best to me.
