What is the difference between sanctification and sanctifying?

Are those words interchangeable? As in:

a. A sanctifying experience under the ministry of Rev. Mark Owen led John to...........

b. In 1995 John experienced sanctification under the ministry of Rev. Mark Owen.

If sanctification is a completed process (and sanctifying is part of a process) then no they are not interchangeable. (?)

Update:

I have to create text in a biography and space is limited.

The pastor told me he had a sanctifying experience under ...........I was trying to state that in a different way like he experienced sanctification under.....
