wHO INVENTED PROPERTY TAX?

     Considering  it existed  in the colonies  long before the US was a country I'd guess the British

    That's a tough one because taxation in and of itself goes way way back, before when Jesus was born...before when Moses did his thing.  Both the Old and New Testaments make reference to taxation.  Not necessarily property taxation though.

    And that's the tough part.  Taxes were levied against citizens according to often ambiguous tax laws.  In old England, a farmer would be taxed according to what the Lord of the area thought the farmer should pay.  No special tax rate other than what he should pay according to the Lord.  And the sheriff who worked for the Lord would take whatever taxes he was told to take from the farmer.

    So is that a property tax against what the farmer owns or is it an income tax against what the farmer is expected to earn with his crops?

    I think the only fair answer to your question is that no one knows.

    It would go back to ancient civilizations, so we really don't know. It may not have been called that, but it existed as men for the army or a harvest tax.
