I'm not sure what type of answer you are looking for. Just put yourself in his shoes and imagine what it would be like to be sick in bed for 3yrs.

I have multiple chronic illnesses and spent a few years where I spent most my days in bed. It was very hard. I felt like I was missing out on life and depression is common. I spent my time reading, snuggling with my kids, talking to a family who visited plus I had tv and a laptop. You have to find ways to entertain yourself.
