There are lots of different tool "boxes" you could get him, from a heavy-duty bucket or canvas carry bag to toolboxes that stack, or serve as step stools. Personally, I use a canvas travel tool bag to work out of but have several standard toolboxes and even buckets that I put long items into. I have friends who have the stacking type boxes because they purposely planned ahead for that, while mine is more pieced together; yeah, I'm jealous. If I were to receive/buy a new box I think I'd be looking at the better quality stackable types (and they come in different sizes) to sort of build up a set.

There are times when I think a stepstool style would be nice, mostly because I'm under 6ft tall.

Leave him alone with his tools.  If he wanted a box, he could have bought one a long time ago.  But he will be very glad if you give him a 3/8 drive socket set.  Metric.
