Is there a point to scented soap or shower gel if it is instantly rinsed off?

Three reasons.. (1) unscented soap doesn't smell very good to humans. Scented soap smells better. Which are people more likely to buy? Stink or olfactory bliss? which would companies have more success marketing? Which would companies make more money with? (2) scents are NOT instantly rinsed off. Soaps are designed to remove oils from skin and hair. Fragrance molecules can penetrate and absorb into the skin and hair follicles and be left behind. And it doesn't take many molecules to leave a pleasant odor. Why do you suppose Joe Biden sniffs women's hair? meaning your assumption that it's instantly rinsed off is way off. (3) when you take a shower (or wash your dishes), you are surrounded by fumes. Pleasant smelling fumes make your experience better right? stink would not. So as a courtesy to you, P&G adds fragrance.
Speaking of courtesy.. I'll add a fourth. Those of us who spend time out in the world with you.... certainly appreciate the work proctor and gamble and others spend making YOU smell as pleasant as possible.

Yes, because the scent is dissolved in a carrier that leaves a residue on the skin, and therefore the scent stays on the skin. The scent itself is usually an oil that then has to be dissolved in a chemical carrier capable of dissolving an oil. This is because the oil itself would be extremely irritating and isn't all that aromatic on its own. most perfumes use some kind of alcohol to do this. While all alcohols are chemically similar, they have vastly different chemical and physical properties. For example, methanol, ethanol, and isopropyl alcohol are all alcohols, but are very different substances.
This is why for example, you can wash your hands with a bar of ivory and you have the characteristic smell as compared to other soaps.

the point is to make money for the manufacturer, more money than they could make with unscented soap.
