    Let the rate be r%, then

    $1200(r%)=$48

    =>

    r%=48/1200=4%.

    CENT MEANS 100

    FOR $1200 , IT IS  $48

    SO FOR $100 , IT IS   100/1200 X 48 = 4%  ANSWER

    (48/1200) x 100

    so, (4/100) x 100 = 4%

    sale tax rate= sale tax/purchase price

    sale tax rate= 48/1200

    = 0.04

    = 4%
