What is this mysterious cord hanging from my TV?

I recently moved into an apartment, and the previous owners left an older Sony Bravia flatscreen TV mounted to the wall.

There is this mysterious nylon cord (or string?) hanging from the wall-mount and I cannot figure out what it is. Is this to manage/hide other cords, or is it some sort of receiver? The wall-mount and tv are fixed, so I can't get behind the TV to take a look. I've attached a close-up and far away pic for reference. Please help!

When pull the cord you can lift the tv system off the wall for maintenance accessing the wires etc. There is normally 2.

It's a motivational sting to get you to pull it.

    A medium-confidence guess:

It's connected to a spring-loaded latch that keeps the TV locked to the mount.  Pull on it, and you may be able to lift the TV off of the mount.  Or the TV will fall off onto your head!
