Can the police trace things back to you if your using an VPN and public wifi?

    To use public wifi you have to identify yourself.  The service needs a verified email address for you and the MAC address of the device you are using.  Then it issues you an external IP for the session.  If you use a VPN, that IP will be local to the place you select rather than the default IP but the service will have no difficulty in connecting it with the rest of your information.  Some public networks block VPNs.

    You do not say what you are doing that would involve 'the police' or what you mean by 'things' but let's suppose you are running a drug gang.  One of the gang is caught.  The first thing the police do is grab the person's phone.  They will have no problem tracking you down using that.  Public wifi data is easy to access.
