Can I keep a fox as a pet?

Theres a lady fox near me and its pregnant and I want to take one of its puppies as a pet. I hear foxes are clever. Can I train it to do tricks?

The rule of thumb is to NEVER have a pet which is smarter than you are.  Unfortunately, this is the situation.

"Lady" fox?  Interesting.  And what would the other gender be?

It depends on the state, I found here information about legalities of exotic animals

If legal, you can, but they are a full time handfull. I suggest you reconsider.

No.  You need special permits and foxes are wild.  They will not be housebroken and they don't do tricks.

They may look a little like dogs but that is all. They do not behave the same. They are not canines like dogs or wolves but are canids just like a badger or stoat. You can tame them but they are constantly on the go and are harder to toilet train.

No wild animals make good pets, not going to argue about dogs and horses used to be wild, turn the clock ahead a few thousand years then argue that point.

In the United States there are about ten states that allow foxes as pets but they need to be permitted and not all vets can treat them.

Training is a must and they can become destructive, they also can stress out very easily so if your thinking about bringing one all around to show all your friends etc then this is not the pet for you.  You need to be devoted to training, exercise, feeding and care. For the pet, it’s not as easy as having a cat, dog, rabbit etc.

Never try and take a wild animal as a pet.  You can get domesticated foxes and in some states it is legal to keep them as pets with a proper license.  You’re lucky to have a pregnant vixen nearby to observe.  You should just enjoy the fox family in the wild while you can and let them all live out their lives.

There’s a lot of information on the internet about keeping a domestically bred fox.  They are not like keeping a dog, very expensive and very time consuming.

Can you afford the $2500 fine for keeping a fox as a pet? SOME states allow you to own a fox as a pet. But not mine.

That wouldn't be a good idea but it would depend on your state and local laws concerning wild animals. Personally I would allow the animal to be free as nature intended.
