Only in cotton and tabacoo in the South. In the North "free" people slaved in factories 10 hours a day for pennies on the dollar.

It basically powered the agrarian economy of the South, which in turn freed up the North to pursue industrialization. It's kind of like how manufacturing jobs were exported overseas to people who will work for less than 1/10th of our own minimum wage and in exchange we pursued the new and lucrative industry of computing.
