How far away were the armies of the South from Washington DC during the Civil War? What was the closest advance?

    The first battle of Bull Run (there were two) had civilians from DC riding buggies to go on a picnic. The Blue lost that battle and then the civilians buggy raced back to DC. The first battle in the War between the States.
