Was it a private detective or could it have been a police show

    Maybe "Barney Miller"  Hal Linden

Serpico (The TV Series, not the movie)

    "Don Meridith" in Police Story

    From the early 80's

    Lee Horsley as "Matt Houston"

Maybe Jason King (Peter Wyngarde) or McCloud (Dennis Weaver)
