Ovid's poem Metamorphoses seems to have been very popular.?

Why might a poem about people changing into trees and flowers and birds and such engage the attention of educated Romans, and indeed us, still, nowadays?

It's really a catalogue of the mythology of Roman culture and is closely tied to the multiple gods of Roman and Greek civilization.  Think of it as almost biblical in a sense.  The Romans worshipped many gods and their beliefs around those myths were as sincere as those of any modern religion. Ovid presents those myths as a great story teller in poetic form.
