Will masks solve the pandemic?

It's not rocket science.  Crowds + Virus = Infections.  When you are within talking distance of other people, the crowds, and you are not protecting them from your virus by wearing a mask, you will infect some of those people.  And they'll go on and infect more people in more crowds and so on.

Remember a large percentage of virus carriers have no symptoms whatsoever.  But they are still contagious.

But if we all wear face coverings (aka, masks) when within spitting distance of others, that minimizes the viruses that go airborne.  So the infections are reduced but not eliminated.  There are other means for spreading the virus other than from the mouth or nose.  Like picking it up from a door knob in a public bathroom.

So no masks will not "solve the pandemic."  But they will help keep the number of infections down to a manageable level for the ERs, ICUs, and morgues.

Only when we have both a therapy and a vaccine for the COVID-19 will we "solve" the issue.  Best we can do without those is to keep it under control so we don't overwhelm our first responders.

The fact that there's even a "debate" is the problem. It's commonsense (or should be) that wearing a mask reduces the spread. This is why other countries are doing SO much better than the US - they've acknowledged its a necessity instead of challenging the scientific facts as some kind of futile political argument.

No. Masks do nothing to combat a virus.  There are people who have some resistance to it, and there are people who are particularly susceptible to it, and who WILL catch it sooner or later - the virus isn't going to go away, it will be with us for a long time.

Slowly, over time the, susceptible ones will succumb, and the remaining population will then have acquired the "herd immunity" that we have heard so much about.  But it cannot be achieved artificially, it is a natural process - that is "natural selection" in action.

Masks MAY reduce the rate of spread of infection, and prevent a large number of cases occurring at once and overwhelming the medical service - but this is by no means proven ; too many people do not wear masks properly, or continuously, and virus particles are extremely tiny, and unless the masks are of medical quality they do not in fact trap the virus itself, only droplets which might carry them.

So all the mask hoo-haw is simply a propaganda exercise to make people FEEL safe.  If you encounter the virus, the mask will not stop you contracting it.  Your immune system is the only  real defence you have.

They will assist the control, that's why they are required.

It won't solve it. It will help slow the spread (if people comply) and help keep hospitals from being overwhelmed.
