Do STDs have to travel up urethra? ?

I’m curious how men get STDs like HIV and herpes. Do these diseases have to travel through the urethra to get an infection? Can men get STDs from external skin exposure?

No, urinary tract infections can do that, stds don't.

HIV is passed through exchanging a lot of blood or body fluids (semen or vaginal fluids), it can also be passed through sharing needles. But it's more likely to be passed through having unprotected sex.

Stds like herpes are passed through skin contact, when you rub your genitals together with a person that has herpes. Herpes can also be passed from the mouth to the genitals during oral sex. If you have oral sex with some one that gets cold sores which are caused by oral herpes.
