English Learner's Question: paraphrase, please?

Could you please paraphrase the latter half of the following passage?

(The narrator, Miss Maberly, and Evelyn have been once schoolmates. A few years after the graduation, the narrator has become a companion for Evelyn)

Evelyn grew dearer to me, and the sympathy and understanding between us more perfect with every hour we spent together. Even if I had never known her before, I could not have been so constantly with her without learning to love her now....

I am not sure what "Even if I had never know her..." part means. Does it mean "even if I had not know her before, my love for her is getting deeper and deeper every minute"? I appreciate any comments. Thank you!
