All lithium batteries lose charge capacity over time. The chemicals in the cells can only react so many times before they get used up.
In most cases it will take years to deplete it significantly. By then most people are probably due for a new phone anyway.

A few reasons. One the battery is charging slowly due to either a glitch in the limiter. That can either be a software glitch for the phone need to be restored through iTunes or a hardware failure. Your charger could be bad. Your battery could be old or Apple calls “Consumed“ Where it will not fully charge because it’s degraded.

If the battery is old, it will tend to lose charge while being used (streaming video/music), playing games any texting with the screen at full brightness.
Same if the battery, charging port, charging cord, has any damage.
Using a lower wattage charging base or USB port, will do this as well, if you are using the phone while charging, even if the battery is good, when it's really low
