What kind of an account? Are you talking about automatic payment withdrawals for taxes and reoccurring expenses? A bank account? An investment account? When you are not sure what you are looking for, how can you expect to find it? Don't they keep files on those things? Try the file cabinet, or an expanding folder.

you need a lawyer who can hire a private detective to find the accounts. then the lawyer can sort it all out from there. if the money is not in your uncle or aunt's name, there's nothing to be done. and if you knew your uncle did this before he died, you should have stepped up and offered to take care of his money. for your aunt too.

Unless you can find a statement you are going to have to ask each bank or credit union in the area but you would need some kind of legal paperwork before they would tell you anything. (Like you are the executor of his estate or something)'
After years of inactivity the money will be turned over to the state and show up on the "find lost money" sites. But again, you'd need proper paperwork to claim it.

The only accounts that would be use for "house repairs, taxes or emergency concerning their house" is accounts that hold money. Usually a bank account but it could be an investment account.
If you look through their paperwork, you will find statements

Your aunt doesn't know this 'family friend'? ....... if this account was set up in his name and the 'family friends' name then when he passed this account became the property of the other named person and all the money in it became theirs......... any account in his name only would have been investigated and found once he died as there would have been/still is something like an account number/bank book in his personal possessions..... so if 'someone' told you about this account of his but no one has any proof of it, maybe it never existed

if your uncle had any accounts in his name when he died, it should have been addressed in his will, try getting his credit report, it should show all open accounts
