Smartphones have become bigger and as powerful if not more than tablets.

They're basically in this limbo land between smart phones and notebooks, except their so big that you can't fit them in your pocket or purse like a smart phone, so that convenience goes out the window, but them being somewhat smaller than a notebook, because they're not any less unwieldy to carry around than a notebook, doesn't really add any extra convenience over a notebook, which is far more powerful and versatile.

Tablets are an inexpensive solution for little kids too young for smart phones who like to play games but whose parents don't want them monopolizing their smart phones to play games and also don't want to dish out the cash for a notebook that, frankly, has versatilaties and capabilities their little kids don't need and would probably break.

Tablets have great application in business and commercial use, but for personal use, their greatest application is that of being a toy for a child too young for their own smart phone or notebook. Once someone is old enough and capable enough for a smart phone and a notebook, a tablet is redundant because all of its functions are covered by one or the other, only more effectively and efficiently.
