Why is John McEnroe a popular celebrity in England, more than other tennis stars?

He is 72.  The daytime TV presenters give him a slot when there aren't any other 'celebs' walking past the TV studios.  He is used for 'memory lane' items.

He was the top Irish-American us lot hated - they may have been 'tantrums' (the favourite word of the insular English) but he hardly let any of us lot get the better of him.

If you don't stand for something you will fall for anything.

Maybe some folks found his early tennis court temper tantrums to be amusing.

He achieved notoriety by playing tennis like a spoiled brat, confirming many of the stereotypical American virtues that the English despise. The term popular celebrity in England is a bit elastic if it includes McEnroe, who did become an able commentator, but he is no Harry Carpenter.

The British like a rebel and he stood out because of his "you cannot be serious" outburst at the umpire. The mellowed McEnroe has become a popular TV pundit at Wimbledon.
