Why did the Rams dump a player who had back to back 1,800 yards?

Todd Gurley's only 26.

Todd Gurley's entering his twilight years with the Atlanta Falcons and other teams.

Becasue they knew he would not be able to go another 1,800 again.

It probably soured them on him when they couldn't use him in the Superbowl against the Patriots because he's breaking down and they don't want to pay him.

To reduce their payroll and injury considerations.

Todd Gurley might be damaged goods by now, I think the Rams made a smart move.

A couple years ago, Gurley hurt his knee after his last great season.  The club consistently claimed that he was healthy, but suddenly started using him sparingly.  He seldom got more than 20 touches.  His y/a plummeted to sub 4.  There's a belief that he's just not the same player he was.

Given that and his very large contract (NEVER sign RBs to large contracts!!!), the team cut him.  It's worth pointing out that the Rams OL was AWFUL last year, so it's possible that Gurley may have a strong bounceback.  But we won't know until we see it.

It was a combination of very little salary cap to pay him, and the doubts about his ability to perform at the level of his 4 years, $65 million contract ($45 million guaranteed).  Which is why the Falcons only paid him $6 million for one year.
