Why do Americans get so few paid holidays compared to Europeans?

In the 1950s a curious thing happened when American productivity surpassed and doubled that of our Western European allies. Instead of taking advantage of the situation to increase leisure/family time while earning the same as our European allies, Americans opted to work more to buy more. Consumerism became the focus to an almost religious level - “whoever has the nicest, newest, biggest of everything wins.” This ideology has never been a driving force among Europeans. Europeans value time away from work more than having more things, hence they have long held the custom of an average of 6 weeks paid vacation time versus 2 weeks in the US. Would you rather a bigger house or more time for doing what you enjoy with the people you love?

All of the money that would be used to pay for the vacations of americans is taken by the USA justice system(which means criminals take it) and taken by the people who live on welfare.

Americans live to work. They have this superstition that paid work creates money. Most of us Europeans work to live. What good is money if you don't have time to spend with friends and family?

For the same reason (although it's not the only reason) europeans often aren't willing to move thousands of miles just for a job.

That's because Americans are more hardworking than Europeans. I'm proud of our American people for working so long. I simply have no respect for Europeans for being lazy, easy going and casual.

Because Americans are not Europeans.  Serious answer.  What works in European culture may not work in American culture.  It's as simple as that.
