Are hyenas friendly? Can you pet them?

Also: are hyenas sorta like dogs? Or are they their own species?

They are not like dogs at all.  They are not like cats.  They are their own species and not even in the same family of dogs or cats.

Dogs are domesticated. Hyenas are very wild and you should do your best to avoid being anywhere near them.

A hyena is not a dog. Dogs are just wolves but a Hyena is actually nearer to cats and mongoose as well as other creatures. There are four different kinds of hyena. If they are hand-reared from babies, they are easy to tame and are often used for hunting. Their job in nature is similar to a cleanup squad. Their jaws can crush the biggest bones and their stomach can digest them. It is not advised to keep one as just like any animal, it may bite a stranger. If it does, those jaws are capable of removing an arm or hand.

No, since they are just wild animals. They are dogs.

No.  Very wild and dangerous.  They are nothing like dogs.  Dogs are domesticated.  Hyenas are not.

Latin: feliform carnivoran.  So more related to cats (feline) than dogs (canine).

Hyenas are feral creatures and are dangerous as hell.  You probably wouldn't want to pet one, otherwise you'd draw back a nub where your hand used to be. :-)
