What happens when the world runs out of crude oil?

    I remember my chemistry teacher asking what will we do in twenty years when the oil runs out, she was really freaking out over it. This was forty years ago.

    By then we will have developed something else.

    Such things run out GRADUALLY---they just get more and more expensive over time-----We switch over to ANOTHER source when it becomes CHEAPER than oil

    It won't actually run out but as it becomes more scarce and remaining reserves more difficult to access it will become more expensive and usage will fall.

    theres plenty of energy and the technology to implement it.. deisel motors can run on vegetable oil, alcohol can be distilled from crops, hydrogen is easily extracted from water .. the reason these are not used widely is its hard to hold a monopoly on energy from those sources ..
