What is the significance behind praying for the dead? ?

In the context of this expression, the dead are not those who have actually physically died.
These, who are called 'dead' are dead in that they haven't accepted Jesus' ransom, they haven't repented of their sins, turned around and dedicated their lives to God.
Our prayers for those who do not know God or his Christ, is that they come to an accurate knowledge of the truth, and become alive.
(Ephesians 2:1) 2 Furthermore, God made you alive, though you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 4 . . .because of his great love with which he loved us, 5 made us alive together with the Christ, even when we were dead in trespasses—by undeserved kindness you have been saved.

There is no significance to praying for the dead. It is absolutely futile

Presumably a request to the Lord to save the souls of the lost departed, though the practice is useless, and not at all biblical. Its a catholic travesty.

People who pray are afraid and so, they try to reassure themselves with some prayers ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

To save them from Hell of course. But if they rejected Jesus’ sacrifice, then there’s no remaining sacrifice left. So it’s kind of pointless now.

Superstitious folks like to think they can steer their god's will..because they believe they have a personal relationship with him, so he is willing to listen and hopefully act on their prayers..Religiosity is a mental disorder..
