Why home builder made foundation wider to lay brick on if metal lintel can be use instead?

You know metal lintel for support brick to lay on. Lintel use on top of garage and windows also even on top of roof when another roof above for brick to lay on.

But with foundation with footers, why make it wider. It takes more concrete to make foundation wider, if can use less concrete but use lintel metal at bottom of every homes for brick to lay on.

They use lintel on every windows and garage but not bottom of home.

    A brick lintel is made to support brick across an opening, not an entire wall.  by adding th cement to the footer, the bricks are then cemented to the footer and it becomes much more stable overall.  A brick lintel just cannot support that much brick.

    In theory you could use a steel lintel in lieu of a concrete ledge but it would be subject to corrosion and slippage because it is very difficult to attach it to the foundation in a way that is not subject to failure. The extra ledge poured into the foundation in the long run is simply cheaper


    The steel lintels over windows and doors are supported on each end by being embedded in the bricks and mortar on each side. They can only fail if the bricks fail and that not very likely. Also being up where they are accessible you can maintain and inspect them much easier to prevent failure from corrosion.

    A lintel just has to span a gap to support the  structure above it and to transfer those loads into the walling it is installed into. 

    Those loads ultimately pass right down the the foundations and they not only have to support the structure above them, but pass those loads out into the subsoil they’re dug into.

    A simple lintel would just make the weight of the structure above cause the entire wall to sink into the ground, like a pastry-cutter. But a strip-foundation which is wider than the wall spreads those loads out so that the wall does not sink. Even better in many cases is a foundation slab, which also extends at least a few inches out beyond the line of the wall, but foundation slabs use even more materials so cost a lot more. So they only tend to be used where the subsoil is not good enough to support a strip foundation and instead needs a larger slab to spread the weight out even more.

    If the building is to be constructed onto solid rock, then the rock itself acts as the foundation if it is deemed strong enough to carry the load of the buildinf.
