What causes a partner to be controlling?

I'm talking both controlling girlfriends and controlling boyfriends.

They demand for your phone, get mad when you go out with friends or family without them, get mad if you have to work late, and most times even put their hands on you.

Even think everyone is out to break you both up.

Could be narcissistic tendencies or they might just be stupid and have no idea that everyone deserves privacy and some leeway in a relationship. Whatever it is, why would someone stay with a creep like that?

I think it's intense fear and insecurity mixed with self-entitlement and lack of respect. It could be from past trauma, or that maybe they themselves are untrustworthy so they don't trust anyone, or they've had trust broken badly either by caregivers or partners in the past. And then they think it's OK to cross boundaries to control the situation so they don't get hurt (in their minds), but ironically, they are hurting themselves.
