Please help! What does 'grave' meaning in this sentence?

'Then almost sadly with grave beauty she said, you poor little bastard giving me cramps like a kid'

    grave means serious in tone or attitude.

    Solemn, or serene, are the equivalents to 'grave' in that context.

    Her bewitching beauty suddenly turned pale, sullen when she became angry  and addressed the person as a bastard who inflicted pain like a kid on her. The refreshing beauty of the countenance of the girl was bound to be pale fuelled by the unscrupulous behaviour of the fellow.
