What happens if you want to take your landlord to small claims court and they don't answer even if you sent your info by certified mail?

I filed a small claims case against my landlord for not fully owing me my money after I had to move out. I sent a certified letter to them and they didn't answer. Now I have to file a 'alias request'. What happens if they don't answer the alias request? I'm already out of pocket $40 and now I have to pay another $36.

That depends on the the legal requirement for effective service in your state.

Eventually they lose automatically when they don't show up for court.

If they don't show up at court, then you win and the judge orders them to pay you.
