I found "Spanish for Dummies" helpful when I first started learning Spanish.

    It does not exist!

If you know how you learn then choose a book that helps you learn that way.

Should you be self-teaching also make sure the book is designed for those teaching themselves.

I have always found the 'Teach Yourself' series is good. Hodder and Stoughton publish them and they easy to find on sites like Amazon.

Although you do not say you may be taking a class in which case you should get the book recommended by the tutor.

Take the books they have in the schools, they will teach you Spanish from the lowest  to the  highest level.

For starters, it would be the English-Spanish dictionary.
