why would anyone rational "believe in" stuff that has no evidence to support it, and which is impossible to prove one way or the other anyway?

Then again, if you are talking about a religion, then people are free to follow whatever religious beliefs they choose, whether the deity is God or some species of  space boogieman. Disenchantment with traditional religions, and a need to believe in some "higher power" has misled the masses, including some overeducated folks who should know better, into seeking satisfaction of their religious needs in the new-age religion of space aliens. In this tacky new religion, contactees have replaced prophets, "stories" have replaced texts, inanities have replaced parables, "impossible technology" has replaced miracles, and "sightings" have replaced visions. As in traditional religions, the deities are as elusive as they are misrepresented.

The unfortunate thing is that "believers" don't realise they are merely following a new religion. They actually take their beliefs seriously. Pathetic or nutty. You decide.
