You can get the first derivative of a polynomial by following this set of directions for each term:

The new coefficient is the product of the old coefficient and the old exponent.

The new exponent is the old exponent minus 1.

If the term has an exponent of 1 it becomes a constant.

If the term is a constant it drops off.

So:

f(x) = 7x³ - 2x²

becomes:

f'(x) = 21x² - 4x

At x = 2, we get:

f'(2) = 21(2)² - 4(2)

f'(2) = 21(4) - 4(2)

f'(2) = 84 - 8

f'(2) = 76
