What is wrong with our propane stove?

When turned on, the burner itself has low blue flames as soon as the knob is turned. But a split second after that an orange flame shoots out from the direction of the dial (away from us).

I believe it is coming from the golden piece to the left of the white spike (sorry, I can't find names for those parts).

Update:

This is a generic portable camping stove, by the way.

The white bit looks like an igniter, and the brass bit like a jet, possibly a pilot jet. Neither of them appear to be in the right place.

Wait a minute or so for it to warm up on a low setting. Then gradually turn it up. Gas blowlamps act like flame throwers until they get hot.
