did monks or priests in the middle ages use any type of weaponry?

or were they just passive figures really in the time period?

    The "Bishop's Mace" was the "preferred" weapon of those in the clergy because it could kill with out "shedding Blood".

    They liked STAFFS too, and clubs.  "Not Shedding Blood" was a mere "legalism"---They could and DID defend themselves and their common property.  You would be just as dead, with a busted skull as a sword wound--only you didn't bleed as much.
