When do you pay for university dorms?
Say you're going to live in a dorm at a university, do you pay for the dorms before you move in, during, like you're paying rent, or is it added after along with your student loans? If its during how do you do it without a job?

Your room and board (dorm and meal plan) are charged at the beginnning of the semester with tution. If you receive loans or other financial aid then that is also applied to the cost of your room and board. Some schools do allow payment plans throughout the semester for students who do not have aid (or enough aid) and cannot make a single payment for the balance.

Room & board contracts for dorms are paid per-term in advance. See the school's website into on housing, dorm contracts, to see how much deposit is required to apply for the dorm room, and when the balance is due, but you will pay for the term in full prior to moving into that dorm room. Since it is all paid in advance, you have no worries about a place to stay or food to eat for the entire term.
BTW, 80% of American college students work at least 20 hrs/wk to help pay school and/or living expenses. Many start earning & saving by age 12-14 (long before they can get a "job!") for their future education. What are you & your parents doing for your education expenses?

Your dorm, meal plan and tuition payments are together. Many universities allow for monthly payments. Starting in August and through November/December for the first semester. Other Schools can want total payment for the semester right before the semester begins.
Your student loan goes direct to the school and covers all dorm, meal plan and tuition. The financial aid you get may or may not cover your total cost.

Different schools have different practices when fees are due. You need to talk to the financial aid office where you hope to go.

When a student applies for financial aid, room and board costs are to be included in the student's anticipated expenses .

Every college is going to be a little bit different, but you always have to pay something before you move in, often half the cost for a semester, with a date halfway through the semester to pay the remainder. Some colleges want the entire semester fees up front. How do you manage this? Through your savings or through your student loans.
