My wife and I take two of our Dobermens to our local childrens hospital twice a month as comfort animals. We had to get a THDD(AKC Therapy Dog Distinguished)

and THDX(AKC Therapy Dog Excellent). In addition to being AKC registered by a  therapy dog organization. AND Perform the required number of visits for the title of both the THDD and THDX. The hospital we visit only allows dogs as comfort animals. Oh yeah, you need to have an insurance rider in excess of $100,000(ours is for $1,000,000). Keep your rat home kid.

I'd start by not giving gerbils to emotionally disturbed kids, it's only a matter of time before you end up with gerbil paste.
