When my brake light is on due to low fluid levels, is my brake really on or is it just a sensor?


Pads are fine- reservoir drips slowly.

Update 2:

That was rather confusing, wasn't it?   The warning light on dash of course, not the light on rear bumper.

    No, in this situation, your brakes are not on. That light is telling you that one of the next few times you try to use them, your brakes will not work at all! Get it fixed.

    Except for the newer SYNMTHETIC BRAKE FLUIDS from CASTROL GT> or EUROPE< all brake fluids are CORROSIVE and TOXIC! Check the COLOR of your fluid! If it si DARK BROWN< it is a DEAD fludi and must be PSWOER FLUSHED OUT and new clean clear fluid PUMPED back into the system! If you have a LEAK somewhere, it may be due to COROOSION within a brake line or brake HOSE! This is a GOOD TIME to double check the condition of your BRAKE PADS>> low levels of FLUID can mean that the pads are wearing down to their limits! And like the BAX< who many times is BVERY WORNG< is right HERE! Do NOT top up with fluids until your h]check that the PADS are evenly worn! GM had the WORST brakes in history for LONG TIMES in the first front drivers! There AR would LOCK UP and force the FRONT ones to do ALL the work! Then the REARS would LOCK UP TOTALLY! OVER TIME old brake fluid becomes like LIQUID SANDPAPER egins to scratch the interior surfaces of the BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER and the CALIPERS as well! If fluid is DARK BRWON< it may already have done some damages someplace in the system!  It can ROT the brake lines front he inside OUT! >>>>>EUROPE CARS insist that you POWER FLUSH the brake fluid OUT and BACK IN every 3-4 years! This is VERY SMART as it will save MONEY in the long run! The MASTER will NOT self destruct, nor will the CALIPER FREEZE UP!

    Check and make sure your emergency brake isn't on.

    Then top off your brake fluid reservoir (look on the lid for the type of fluid - i.e. DOT3).

    If it got below a certain point you may need to bleed your brakes.

    If your reservoir is 'dripping' then you need to get it fixed - ASAP.

    Ignore anonymous. Your car might not use DOT3 fluid, it might be DOT5. ( or 4 or 5.1) Check the handbook , they don’t mix.

    Top of the brake fluid and pull the brake release. That addresses BOTH issues.

    There is a switch on a float in the brake fluid reservoir that turns on the warning light. As long as no air sucked into the brake lines, you still have brakes. You can add brake fluid to the reservoir easily to raise the fluid level and that is OK. Get the right brake fluid- your owner's manual tell which one to use. However, if air gets in the brake lines and the pedal is spongy your brakes will not work well, if at all and the lines need to be bled of air.. You need a wrench and extra fluid. Watch afew you tubes on this if it turns out to be needed.

    The fluid went low because it either leaked out or the brake linings all wore down a lot and may also need replacing soon.

    If your brake light comes on because of low level brake fluid the brakes are not on but you do need brakes. Don't fill the brake reservoir. When the caliper pistons are pushed back into the calipers when getting new pads and rotors the brake fluid level will come back up to where it should be. If you fill the reservoir brake fluid will get all over the engine compartment when you get new brakes.
