Board trustees get paid?

That will vary by university. However, board members and trustees are not in any sort of salaried position. Generally they are paid expenses to attend board meetings, and perhaps something for each meeting they attend, whether the board meets monthly or quarterly or annually. Their "pay" might be as little as reimbursement of travel expenses to the meeting and a "nice" luncheon together. Most trustees consider such an appointment more as community service, not for anything resembling a healthy paycheck.

If a college is trying to raise funds for a project, and as a whole the university fails to secure those funds, traditionally it falls on the board of directors to make up those funds. That includes paying out of their own pockets. That's why they tend to be wealthy people. They aren't paid in a way that you would recognize as some get rich wage. They are reimbursed for their time including a stipend. Usually it is less than 1% of what they have donated to the college.
