My MacBook pro cost ~$900 5 years ago. The latest version goes for ~$2800 and nothing has been added. Why the spike in price?

    Because it’s in the logo

I don't know if you bought it secondhand or smth, but NO Mac Pro has EVER sold for that little, so... But anyway, one, Apple is a profit monger, so they'll hike up prices where they can (Apple tax, anyone?), and two, as someone else said, the stuff inside is much newer and faster, so price hike.

You didn't buy a MacBook Pro, new, with current specs, for $900, at any time.

Profit motive.  Or maybe the current one is the Steve Jobs memorial computer.
