How can one manipulate the source code behind an image using a Windows 10 laptop?

manipulate to do what exactly?  

ETA: I supposed you could try opening it in Wordpad or Notepad.  I've tried looking at source code for a photo once before, but it makes no sense. Once you touch any part of it, the thing won't display.

Images do not have source codes.

By manipulate I meant experiment with and rearrange the sequence of code. It's for a hw assignment in educational technology. I hope this explanation makes sense.
